Dedication

In humility we offer this dedication to Swami Sivananda Saraswati, who initiated Swami Satyananda Saraswati into the secrets of yoga.

Purpose

The Bihar Yoga Wiki has been launched on the occasion of the Munger Yoga Symposium conducted at Ganga Darshan Vishwa Yogapeeth from 25th to 28th October 2018. The Symposium has been a unique and significant occasion to deepen the inner connection with yoga vidya, the living knowledge of yoga, heralding Bihar School of Yoga’s second chapter of yoga.

During the first chapter of yoga from 1963 to 2013, the practices and teachings of yoga were disseminated far and wide to every region of the world, fulfilling the mandate given to Sri Swami Satyananda Saraswati by his beloved guru Sri Swami Sivananda Saraswati, for the benefit and upliftment of all yogic aspirants and those in need.

In accordance with the vision and mandate of Sri Swami Satyananda, it is time to embark on the second chapter of yoga, a new phase in the development and propagation of yoga under the guidance of Sri Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati.

More than ever, yoga is the need and panacea of today. It is time for sincere yoga practitioners to embark on life’s most profound voyage of discovery by deepening the connection with the yoga vidya, and learning to live yoga moment to moment.

The Bihar Yoga Wiki is an online encyclopaedia of the Bihar Yoga/Satyananda Yoga system, which is being produced in collaboration by the worldwide Bihar Yoga/Satyananda Yoga family. It is presented here to make the yogic teachings available in English to all in an accessible and easily understood way.

The Bihar Yoga Wiki is intended for yoga students and practitioners, spiritual seekers, and all those who wish to increase their understanding of the vast field of yogic teachings and practices.

Necessity of yoga teacher & personal experience

Yoga is experiential science. Reading about yoga can help one to understand concepts better, but yoga cannot be learned nor mastered from books or videos. Rooted in ancient, all-encompassing and sound philosophies that in practice translate themselves into yoga psychology and yoga psychophysiology, yoga covers full range of human existence. Yet, positive and lasting transformation of an individual with the help of yoga happens only through systematic personal practice and experience. The intention of Swami Sivananda and Swami Satyananda was to deepen human experience through yoga. The whole purpose is to commit oneself to learning and experiencing the aspirations and aims of yoga, as they have been outlined in classical texts of various yoga branches. The aim is to live, apply and become the knowledge that yoga offers. Then only, all dimensions of human personality are positively affected. This brings lasting positive transformation in the body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

Therefore, since the basis of positive change in an individual through yoga is personal experience, one needs to have a competent teacher who has himself underwent through the same process. When one embarks on the journey through unknown territory, the help of experienced guide who has traversed the path already, is essential. The teacher, or guru, knows what learning has to be undertaken and when, what understanding needs to be derived, what the most appropriate system of learning should be, the process and the focus at each stage of the journey. This principle is applicable on all levels of yoga learning, from the simplest practices of asanas to the most advanced subjects of yoga. In order to learn yoga properly and progress steadily on one’s path, the guidance of yoga teacher is necessary.

In classical yogic traditions, the sequence of learning is decided by the group of experts, or masters, who have reached the apex of their experience and continue to contribute to the development of knowledge. When an individual connects with learning and understanding of this knowledge, they become part of that tradition, or parampara. Those who become part of the tradition remain connected with the teaching and the essence of the knowledge, the vidya. The tradition, the parampara, provides continuous and balanced development of an individual, as well as expansion and appreciation of what is received through the timeless vidya of yoga.
